Crandall Cinema

Crandall Cinema is ACAPA's dedicated film exhibition and study facility, located in the lower level of Dunmore Hall on the east side of the Eastbridge campus. The cinema was dedicated on October 14, 1971, in honor of ACAPA founder Harriet Lowell Crandall (1901–1983), whose vision shaped the college's commitment to the moving image as a legitimate art form alongside the performing and visual arts. A commemorative plaque at the main entrance reads: "To Harriet, who believed that cinema was the art of the age."

The cinema serves as the primary instructional and public screening venue for the Department of Film and Media Studies and hosts weekly public programs open to the Eastbridge community. It is one of the few academic cinema facilities in New England maintaining full 35mm and 16mm projection capability alongside contemporary digital cinema.

Spring 2026 season now posted. See the screening schedule below. The 29th Annual ACAPA Student Film Festival runs April 17–20, 2026. Details →

History

When ACAPA opened in 1947, Harriet Lowell Crandall insisted that film be treated as a serious discipline equal to music, theatre, and the fine arts—a perspective then unusual in American higher education. Film courses were initially taught in a repurposed lecture room using a rented 16mm projector. As enrollment grew and the Film Studies curriculum expanded, the college undertook construction of a purpose-built cinema facility.

Ground was broken in 1969 and the cinema was completed and dedicated in October 1971. Harriet Crandall attended the dedication ceremony and introduced the inaugural screening: Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game (1939), projected in 35mm from a print borrowed from the Library of Congress. She remained closely associated with the cinema until her death in 1983.

In 2004 the college completed a renovation of Dunmore Hall that added the Lowell Studio, a 60-seat secondary screening room named after Crandall's maternal family, along with an upgraded projection booth and expanded lobby space. The main hall's seating was refurbished and digital projection was added in 2009. A further technical upgrade in 2021 replaced the digital cinema projector with a current-generation 4K DCP-compatible system.
