About the Library

Hartwell Library opened in 1975 as a purpose-built facility designed to meet the specialized research and performance-preparation needs of a conservatory-style institution. The building was named in honor of George Hartwell (1899–1981), an Eastbridge industrialist and early benefactor whose founding gift of $1.2 million made construction of the original structure possible. Hartwell served on ACAPA's inaugural Board of Trustees from 1947 until 1974 and was a lifelong patron of the arts in Vermont.

In 2012, a major renovation and expansion project added approximately 11,000 square feet to the original building, upgrading infrastructure throughout and creating new dedicated spaces for digital media work, special collections research, and group study. The renovation was funded in part through the Arts Forward capital campaign and a matching grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Library Director: James Okafor, MLIS (appointed 2015). Mr. Okafor came to ACAPA from a position as Associate Director of Collections at the New England Conservatory Libraries. He may be contacted at j.okafor@acapa.edu or by calling the library main desk at (802) 555-0190.
